I've given it over a week. I've tried different techniques, different kinds of combs, different products.....to no avail. I cannot learn to backcomb my hair! It's hopeless. I've asked for advice, I've looked online....I just can't do it. Here's my new haircut. Very nice- compliments of Martha.

You can see in the second photo, that I have a headband in. Now, wouldn't it be nice to have a little more volume in the back? That's what I thought too. I can't get it to stay. What usually happens is that I start with a little hairspray at the root and I try to lift it with my fingers or a comb. Then, I spray a little more....still, nothing. Then a little more and more and more...until it's time to go and all I've got left is a flat top-o-the-head full of cruncy, sticky hairspray. Awesome.

So, I'm asking those of you who know a thing or two about back-combing.....what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?! Help!

girl. I believe in you. take a chuck of hair, maybe 1/2 thick, backcomb the bottom inch ONLY, (to avoid the rest of that chuck of hair looking like a nest) and pack it down enough so that when you let go of it it stands up a bit- if you only do like 4 combs backwards you pry didn't do enough to make it stay. THEN, whilst still holding that chunk, add a bit more hair immediately behind the first slice, still only about another 1/2 inch, and do the same. This allows for the newly added hairs to be 'connected' to the previous backcombed section, thus resulting in backcombing that doesn't look separated. ALSO, if you take too much hair, yours is very thick, so it will do you no good. start with small sections, the smaller the better. then just add to it and keep a-going. Only do the top, no need to keep going down the back of your head like Suz was tryin to do. And if you got somethin good, spray it! Let me know how that goes. Go get em!
So Heather, this is a very simple but can be a tricky process at times. Do you have a proper backcomb. That is really key to the start of the process. Second, hairspray the hair before backcombing. Other than that, follow Marth's instructions, she knows, being the Hair Woman and all. Anyways, I love you and maybe will get to see you next week?! -Amber
Heather, I would KILL for your beautiful, thick, shiny, healthy hair... all naturale!! If you can't get that back-comb business figured out, you'll still look completely beautiful. Guaranteed. And boy do I wish you were here Marth - I really need a haircut, but I'm a bit timid. My hair is past the middle of my back and touches my belly button when I slouch a little!! haha! very looooong.
i read the title and was thinking someone has some crazy back hair if they need a back comb. but i'm always thinking in a pretty weird fashion. hi heather! cheers!
